Responsible Camping

Orkney Campers and Responsible Camping

We all want to make the most of our holiday time and enjoy ourselves, but for many of us these days we don't want to feel like our enjoyment is at the expense of our holiday destination. Luckily there are many things we can do to minimise our impact and if we all do a few little things we can ensure Orkney remains a beautiful wildlife haven for many years to come.

There are some small things you can do to make your holiday as zero impact as you can.

  • The most important thing you can do is buy local during your stay - Make the most of being here in the Islands and try our produce - we have the best beef in the uk, fudge and cheese to die for and many other tasty products including dairy, bakery and confectionary products.
  • Don't buy more food than you need.
  • Recycle, reduce, reuse. There are many recycling points throughout Orkney (see recycling sheet in your welcome pack.)
  • Park up and get on your bikes or feet - what better way than to see our Islands than to slow down the pace further and get there under your own steam. Orkney is pretty flat so suitable for leisurely cyclists and children. Details of where you can hire bikes from are included in your welcome pack.
  • Your van comes equipped with environmentally friendly cleaning products, toilet roll and a carrier bag holder to use as a rubbish bin. Please feel free to make use of these.
  • You will find a couple of wind up torches in your van - great for those night time visits to the toilet and you won't need to remember to replace batteries.
  • Make use of the snuggly blankets in the van if the evenings are chilly.
  • Light one of your citronella tealights outside on a table to deter those midges rather than spray chemical fly sprays.
  • Consider offsetting the environmental cost of travelling to Orkney. One of the easiest ways of offsetting your carbon footprint is to plant a tree .

We pledge to do what we can to make Orkney Campers as carbon neutral as possible:

  • All our paper and business cards are recycled. We reuse envelopes where possible.
  • The vans themselves are at least 25 years old and don't owe the environment anything.
  • The fridges in our vans are CFC and HCFC free.
  • We clean the vehicles with environmentally friendly products as far as possible - this is better for the environment and helps keep the air in the vans chemical free for you.
  • We use an A rated washing machine and wash everything at 30 degrees.
  • By default we use the internet for communication as much as possible, only posting out minimal paperwork, unless requested by the customer.
